In the 1960s New Brighton in Christchurch NZ was the one of the very few places you could go Saturday shopping. It had a carnival atmosphere and was THE thing to do in the weekend. Sadly when shops were allowed to be open at weekends all over the country, the carnival slowly faded, leaving a feeling of desertion and sadness and many shops closed down. These images were made in July, 1995 to express my feelings about that.
